What it measures.

In plain English. This describes what a lab measures; it cannot tell you what your own result means.

  • Cortisol

A hormone made by the adrenal glands. It follows a daily rhythm, highest soon after waking, so the time of the draw matters.

How to prepare.

  1. The lab gives no fasting rule for this test. Ask when you order if you are unsure.
  2. Book the draw between 7 and 9 a.m.; cortisol follows a daily rhythm.
  3. Tell the lab if you take prednisone or prednisolone; both affect the result.
